Okehampton Castle
(6 miles)

(1)

On a wooded spur above River Okement, Okehampton Castle is the remains of the largest castle in Devon, one that was built soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle.  In the 14th century it became a rather more luxurious residence to Hugh Courtenay, the Earl of Devon, but when he fell out of favour with Henry VIII, the castle fell to ruin, and the result is what you see today.  When you visit, it’s a chance to picnic in the grounds and walk through the woodlands nearby, taking in the scenery and the history, perhaps with the aid of an audio tour to bring it all to life. Okehampton Castle is open seasonally so do check the website for further details.

Widemouth Beach
(20 miles)

(2)

Three miles south of Bude, Widemouth Bay Beach is a long, open bay that’s popular with families and surfers, while at low tide there are hundreds of rock pools to explore.  It’s a wonderful place to learn to surf or body board thanks to fantastic conditions and lots of local surf schools in the surrounding area.  There’s free parking at both ends of the bay as well as viewing points.  Dogs are welcome throughout the year on the south section of the beach, otherwise known as Black Rock, but on the northern part there are seasonal dog bans.  It has a wild feel to it, which adds to its appeal, and there is lifeguard cover in the summer, but nonetheless do be careful when swimming.

Summerleaze Beach

Less the five minutes on foot from the centre of Bude, Summerleaze Beach is an easy beach to get to and enjoy for the whole day.  There’s a river flanking the sandy beach and it’s sheltered by a breakwater, making it popular with families and surfers.  You can book beach huts daily or weekly, and adding to its charm is a part man-made/part natural salt water sea pool to swim in at the foot of the cliff, that’s been welcoming swimmers since it opened in 1930.  There’s lifeguard cover in the summer months, dogs need to be kept on leads from May to September, and there are toilets and disabled toilets close by as well as an RNLI shop, sandy play area, a beach café, and a large car park that leads directly to the sand dunes.

April 2024

Second visit and again enjoyed our week. Fish and chips and Sunday roast in pub was great. Plenty of coastal walks and local walks. Thanks

December 2023

Perfect stay. Will be back for sure

September 2023

Beautiful cottage, comfortable and peaceful. We loved the courtyard and enjoyed sitting out. Very blest with the weather. Thank you so much for the basket of goodies. Sadly the best before date on the bread was the day we arrived. Also on one of the hottest days of the year the cheese was in the basket sitting in the sun. We enjoyed the walks from the cottage. There are so many places to visit we are spoilt for choice. We would echo the comment about the lack of window covering in the kitchen. We didn't want to put the light on because we felt totally on view. We can only guess how the opposite neighbours may feel. Such a shame because it's such a lovely cottage. So much thought has gone into it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a review, we're pleased to hear you enjoyed the cottage. We passed your comments on to the owner and are happy to report a blind has now been fitted in the kitchen in order to provide further privacy. Best wishes, The Toad Hall Team.

August 2023

Lovely stay at Willow Cottage - booked last minute and really pleased we did. Beautiful cottage, all the interior design very tastefully chosen. We had some long drives to Bude, Torquay, Woolacombe to name but a few beaches and they were all well worth the drive (although the Sat Nav did love the B'roads, which were nail-biting at times). Had a lovely evening meal at the village pub - very welcoming locals - super friendly (and their dogs too). Appreciated the flowers and the welcome hamper - lovey touch.

June 2023

Beautifully designed cottage and comfortable. Appreciated the flowers and made use of the outside space as was so sunny. We loved Northlew - visited the church and went for some short evening walks from the cottage and very friendly at the pub. Had a lovely day at Sandymouth Bay.

May 2023

Our second stay at Willow Cottage in less than a year and every bit enjoyable as the first. Lovely touch leaving the can of Abbott Ale, although they do usually come in packs of 4 :-) Such a great base to explore Dartmoor from. We particularly enjoyed walking from Belstone and Fingle Bridge with Mollie, our Collie. Two great pubs at both of these places. Green Dragon as friendly as ever - good food and good ale. Looking forward to our next visit. Thanks you.

May 2023

A delightful cottage with everything to hand. Many thanks for our most welcome pack and Rabbie, our Westie, thanks you for his treats. Super village too.

May 2023

We loved the cottage, and the local pub was good. Sadly the local shop has shut down meaning a 7 mile trip to Okehampton most days to pick up essentials.

April 2023

Amazing house... So lovely, can't fault it in anyway. Great local pub with friendly folk. Thank you so much for the welcome hamper.

April 2023

Just leaving after a lovely week visiting relatives in the village and reliving childhood holiday destinations. Cottage very comfortable with all we could need here. Perfect early morning dog walk down the footpath opposite to a field she could run. Geeat food in the pub. Thank you!

April 2023

A perfectly equipped and snug cottage from which to explore mid-Devon and weather storm Noah. We have had a really relaxing and enjoyable time staying here. Northlew is a lovely village and we found a welcoming atmosphere, great food and excellent real ale at the Green Dragon. The welcome hamper and fresh eggs and flowers were super touches and also much appreciated. Thank you

March 2023

Wonderful stay at Willow Cottage. Very cosy and well appointed. Really appreciated the welcome goodie - a lovely touch. Village has a lovely community feel. In a walk around the village we visited the shop, pub and 'Tania's Tarts'. Everyone was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. The weather wasn't on our side but we managed to get to Bude on the one sunny day. Food at The Green Dragon was excellent. We had fish and chips to takeaway and Sunday roast in there. Thank you for a lovely stay.

March 2023

Another wonderful stay at Willow Cottage - great place for a base while visiting family in Northlew.

December 2022

Willow Cottage has been our home away from home this Christmas. We have relatives in Northlew and staying here enabled our first en-mass family gathering, thank you! The Welcome Hamper was thoughtful and divine. It feels cosy and warm here, thank you for the mini Christmas tree also :-) Opening presents with the wood burner going felt special indeed. In true style, the weather this festive season has been windy and rainy. Not much exploring to be done. The cottage is so well equipped, us two adults and our three year old have enjoyed the stay. Alas we begrudgingly leave. Instructions for use of appliances, wifi and recycling all clear. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you. Thanks for everything.

December 2022

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Willow Cottage. You can tell the owners really care about their guests and everything was spot on. The welcome hamper and doggy treats was so appreciated. The beds were extremely cosy and comfy. Would love to return.

September 2022

Fantastic cottage. Green Dragon pub excellent. Locals really friendly. Would love to return.

September 2022

Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful cottage, it really gave us a week away with our 13 week old son. As soon as you walk in the front door you feel so welcome and that's before you see the welcome pack which was delicious (we have already purchased some more of the fudge from the village shop!). We have filled our week with visits to Okehampton Castle, War Horse Valley Country Farm, Castle Drogo, Dartmoor Prison Museum, Lydford Gorge, RHS Rosemore and South Devon Railway - we have been so busy! We can't wait to come back when the little one is a little older to go on more walks and to cycle the Tarka Trail. Thank you again for letting us stay in your gorgeous cottage.

September 2022

What a beautiful place to stay, so well thought out. The welcome hamper was the best we have ever had and a really nice touch. Beds are really comfortable and the decor very tasteful. The only small item missing is some pint glasses for us beer drinkers. Northlew is a cracking village with a proper pub and cheap to eat and drink in. The locals made us feel really welcome, which made us a little nervous, as we thought they may wish to burn us at the end of the week ;-) We would love to come back and will hopefully book very soon. We've booked many cottages with Toad hall and never had a bad one and Willow Cottage didn't disappoint.

August 2022

We have had such a lovely stay at Willow Cottage, the perfect place to explore this beautiful part of Devon. We have felt very comfortable and loved the peace and tranquility of the village. The Dogs loved the walks! We hope to return - Willow Cottage is our new favourite place :-) Thank you so much.

August 2022

What a fabulous Cottage; a real Home from Home. It was a joy to stay here. The attention to detail was fabulous, the hamper was a lovely touch and much appreciated. Thank you! Willow Cottage has everything you need and is a great base for exploring both Devon and Cornwall. We loved it so much we even looked at Christmas dates if the Cottage was available :-( Thank you once again. You have thought about every detail and it shows, from fresh flowers, items in the fridge, BBQ coals and a great welcome pack full of recommendations. Perfect! Thank you.

July 2022

Many thanks for a wonderful stay in Northlew. We adopt previous comments on the obvious thought that has gone into providing a welcoming space to relax and explore. The basket of goodies was outstanding. When I was watering the outside plants I was stopped by a neighbour who mistook me for the owner. When I explained that I wasn't, she wanted me to pass on her thanks for the way you have changed the cottage and put new sparkle into the street. We come to Northlew not infrequently to visit family. Looking forward to making Willow Cottage our "home away from home". The next time we are here.

May 2022

What a relaxing week in this beautiful cottage. So well equipped and sympathetically renovated. We have been so comfortable and have slept so well in the comfy beds. The cottage provides a great base to explore the local (and not so local!) area. We enjoyed two evenings in the The Green Dragon (just around the corner), we were made to feel so welcome and couldn't get over the pub's great value - mains under £10!!! We also enjoyed Sunday lunch at Bearslake Inn, Sourton. We all managed to ride the Tarka Trail from Barnstable to Bideford and back, stopping at Instow for lunch - recommend Tarka Trail cycle hire. Saunton Sands, parking at Sandy Lane car park provided a lovely walk through the dunes to a deserted beach with acres of space for beach cricket and dog walking. RHS Rosemoor was beautiful and only a 35 min drive - hugely recommend the cream tea sitting in the lovely gardens. A thoroughly enjoyable week!. Thank you.

May 2022

The cottage is really beautiful and furnished to a high standard. A lot of thought has gone into everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible including a lovely welcome hamper. Would definitely recommend.
