White Oxen Manor is situated within a sheltered valley on the southern boundaries of Dartmoor National Park surrounded by fields and woodland.  It is an ancient listed Devon Longhouse standing in its own grounds, with three delightful cottages converted from a 17th Century barn situated in the courtyard. The light and airy cottages retain many original features including owl slit windows and exposed beams and offer very comfortable and spacious accommodation personally maintained by the owners. They are ideally situated for visiting the moors, the lovely South Hams area, the ancient towns of Dartmouth and Totnes, nearby Dartington Hall and Devon’s wonderful coastline and beaches. The nearby tiny village of Rattery has one of the earliest pubs in the country dating from 1028. Guests are welcome to enjoy the land around the cottages.

Owl Cottage is a must as a romantic hideaway, Badger Cottage is spacious and ideal for a family and Fox Cottage features an unusual, very roomy and attractive living room, excellent for extended families. All the cottages are fully centrally heated, so ideal for winter breaks.

Please note: this property can be booked together with either nearby Badger Cottage or Fox Cottage (subject to availability) providing accommodation for up to 6 people, 8 people, or all 3 places together providing accommodation for up to 12 people.

Entrance door from patio area into delightful well equipped kitchen under sloping beamed roof. Electric hob, built-in oven, microwave and fridge/freezer.
Four steps up to superb very spacious living room with huge westerly window, sofa, chairs, Smart TV, DVD player and many interesting features including owl slits and a balustrade that separates the dining area with table to seat 4.
Stairs down to large bedroom with 5ft bed, fitted cupboards and en-suite bathroom with  bath and shower, basin and WC.
A washer/dryer is housed in a passageway under the stairs.

Own private patio area situated in the stable yard with table and chairs that looks across to the owners’ stables and up to fields and trees beyond. Barbecue available.

Easily accessible from the main route through South Devon to Cornwall, Rattery is a quiet village with a cosy pub, close to the southern edge of Dartmoor. You may be pleased to hear that its name is believed to have derived from the words “red tree” rather than having anything to do with rodents!  Rattery village is well-placed for exploring the moors, the beautiful rolling South Hams countryside, and stunning South Devon coastline beyond.

Being so close to Dartmoor you will, no doubt, want to get out and about to make the most of the vast and varied landscape of the moors, from bleak rocky outcrops, to swathes of heather moorland, and rivers rushing through deep wooded valleys, there is no better place to get close to nature and enjoy far-reaching rural views. A haven for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, Dartmoor is perfect for those looking for an active holiday outdoors.

You'll also discover that Dartmoor is home to many picturesque towns and villages with their quirky antiques shops, traditional tearooms and cosy pubs. There are so many places to stop, have walk or simply enjoy the view, but be sure to dress appropriately as the weather is notoriously changeable on Dartmoor!

Several excellent attractions are easily accessible from Rattery, including the family-friendly Pennywell Farm, the Butterflies and Otters Sanctuary, the River Dart Country Park and the chance to enjoy a scenic ride on a steam train with the South Devon Railway.

Head south to visit vibrant and characterful market town of Totnes, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays when the markets are held. Or if you fancy a day slightly further afield, then why not explore the historic waterside towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe, or venture to the beach and walk the scenic South West Coast Path at Slapton, Torcross, Bantham, Thurlestone or Bigbury on Sea, to name just a few of the stunning beaches less than an hour's drive away.

A holiday cottage in Rattery is conveniently situated for enjoying the delights of Dartmoor, the beautiful South Hams countryside, and the stunning South Devon coast.

Enjoyed a pleasant lunch here. Would like to have explored the grounds but weather was poor.

Had a fantastic Easter Sunday dinner here. Played giant chess in the garden afterwards. Staff really helpful and meal was lovely!

April 2023

Had two lovely evenings at this venue, beautiful setting and staff very friendly. Meals delicious.

June 2022

We had Sunday lunch here. Nice food but we’re very slow in the day. Waited at least 30mins for our starters, which turned up at the same time to our mains. They took our mains away and when we asked to bring them back and take away the starters they disappeared and we had to chase. I think we’re struggling with staff. The food was very nice though.

July 2021

Lovely setting, staff welcoming and friendly, food was delicious.

June 2021

This was the closest restaurant to our house. We had an evening meal there that was enjoyable but perhaps overpriced. The grounds and bird life made it very attractive.

June 2021

We had a lovely meal here, with the food and service being very good. The mill building is full of character, while the grounds are very relaxing and a great place to sit outside with a drink.

August 2019

Lovely grounds and pleasant staff, food expensive for what is served, I think they are trying to be a gastro pub, which they are not.

July 2019

Beautiful inside and out. Gorgeous huge garden with lake and streams. Inside impeccable, large yet cosy.

Wonwell Beach
Wonwell Beach
(11 miles)

(5)

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Wonwell is a sandy beach on the east shore of the Erme river which joins Mothecombe at low tide. It affords visitors a large expanse to explore and is accessed via a woodland path from the road which takes about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is a slipway from the road to the shore of the river and at low tide you can walk along the edge to the beach itself, so make sure you get your timings right to make the most of this one. Parking is limited at Wonwell Beach so keep that in mind when you’re heading over. Road parking allows for around 20 cars depending on their size and there aren’t really any facilities around, although there are toilets nearby. This does mean you need to be prepared if you’re heading there for the best part of the day, but also makes for a very peaceful experience whether it’s lounging about on the sand with a picnic in the summer, or a stroll in the cooler months, simply taking in the atmosphere. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round so it’s the perfect place to take them for a run around. Something to be careful of – do keep an eye on the tide to avoid getting cut off when it comes in and getting very wet en route back to dry land!

Lovely beach. so quiet at certain times. always different. great for dogs. parking very limited.

May 2022

Amazing spot, so peaceful. Parking the only issue.

June 2021

Nice beach and great walks that lead to it, very few people around in August! Limited parking so you are better off walking there.

August 2019

Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.

September 2017

Lovely beach but bit of a trek for little ones

April 2017

Broadsands Beach
(12 miles)

In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).

Ayrmer Cove
Ayrmer Cove
(12 miles)

(20)

Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!

Mothecombe Beach
(12 miles)

(3)

One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.

Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.

September 2023

A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!

May 2021

Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa

April 2017

Elberry Cove
(12 miles)

(1)

Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.

October 2017

Have stayed at Owl Cottage and The Roundhouse on and off over the last 12 years. Both cottages are very comfortable and cosy. Philip and Margaret are superb hosts, always helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The welcome cream tea is always very acceptable.

September 2017

I enjoyed my stay in Owl Cottage at White Oxen Manor and had a lovely welcome as before by the owners and they were very welcoming to my golden retriever who loves the freedom there! I have written them a card to say thank you and hope to go again. Thank you Toad Hall for very hassle free arrangements.

August 2017

My husband and I needed somewhere to use as a base while we did some house hunting. Owl cottage was perfectly situated for this; close to the moors for lovely days out walking as well as nipping over to Teignmouth to see family. The owners very kindly allowed our 3 dogs to stay - via prior arrangement. The cottage itself was immaculate and SO comfy. It had everything we needed and we felt like it was home from the moment we arrived. The owners had made some scones for our arrival, and there was a gorgeous vase of flowers in the living room - Touches like this really mean a lot. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Owl cottage and we defiantly will be returning.

August 2017

Owl Cottage is beautiful. Exceptionally clean, comfortable and more than big enough for two plus one large dog. Lovely touches by the owners - fresh flowers, tea, coffee, sugar, milk etc were left for us. Plenty of cleaning equipment and dishcloths. Fresh scones, clotted cream and jam were also bought to us. There was more than enough crockery to use, in fact much more than expected. The owners are lovely friendly people. The surrounding area is very nice rolling fields with cows and horses. The local village of Rattery is a bit further to walk than stated (1 mile) did seem further due to the roads, quite steep and bendy in places. Can certainly recommend the pub The Church Inn, which is in the village. All staff very accommodating and the food is exceptional. We ate there about four times during our stay and you can take the dog as well. Overall I would recommend Owl Cottage

May 2017

This property is the best we have ever stayed in.

May 2017

All excellent and the cream tea on arrival was unexpected and really delicious. I will book again but not in the summer as I did find the traffic noise intrusive when outside. Inside the property you cannot hear it at all. The surroundings are spectacular and especially good for my dog. Owners very friendly and welcoming.

May 2017

Lovely property in good quiet location just off the A38 and well placed for Dartmoor. Warm welcome from the owners and a lovely cream tea awaiting us which was much appreciated. Cottage was equipped with everything we needed and the owners are happy to accept dogs which is one of our considerations when looking for holiday properties. Would love to return.

October 2016

We have been to this property several times and once again have had a comfortable stay. The owners are always so helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble for them.

April 2016

Would it be possible to pass our thanks to Phillip and Margaret Andrade please? They were so lovely, welcoming and caring, and obviously dog lovers, like us! There was a fab cream tea awaiting us when we arrived which was a lovely touch! We really appreciated and enjoyed meeting and chatting to them.

October 2015

We thought your whole set up to be excellent from the dog welcome package to this follow up message. The owners could not have been more friendly and helpful,we have had an extremely wonderful holiday.

August 2015

Beautiful cottage in very good location. Owners were very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

May 2015

We rented all 3 cottages over the weekend for a family celebration. Ideal and safe location for children, the owners Mr and Mrs Andrade could not have been more friendly and helpful.

March 2015

Good for the dogs who enjoyed their holiday as did their owners. Peaceful , good views and excellent hosts.

September 2014

Owl Cottage was perfect for us and we feel that this property has to be visited to be fully appreciated. The proximity to the A38 was great for quick access to any route but in no way disturbed the restful feeling of White Oxen Manor. The owners, Philip and Margaret, couldn't have been more helpful or welcoming even writing down the recipe for their delicious pickled cucumber!!! Great for our dog too, lots of space to run around. Can't recommend Owl Cottage highly enough!

September 2014

Sharon and I, (and Charlie the yorkie) were very pleased with our stay at Owl Cottage, which far exceeded our expectations. The accommodation was far better than it appeared in the advertisement and was exceptionally clean. The cream tea on arrival was a very personable touch and much appreciated. The owners were both very pleasant, friendly, easy to talk to and very, very helpful, as was Rosie the collie! We enjoyed this stress and pressure-free break. I personally enjoyed overcoming my fear of horses and we enjoyed visiting all the places which were within easy travelling distance. Exceptional stay and value!! - thank you.

April 2014

We had a lovely weeks holiday in Owl Cottage. The owners were very welcoming and helpful. It was lovely to have scones and clotted cream awaiting us on arrival. we would highly recommend this cottage. well situated for Dartmoor plenty to do in the area.

November 2013

We received a warm welcome when we arrived and really appreciated the scones and clotted cream awaiting us in the kitchen. Although the cottage looks quite nice on the website, we thought it was much better than in the photos and was a lovely place to stay. It is in a really convenient position, just off the A38 (though it's really quiet and you can't hear the traffic), which meant it was really easy to get to Totnes and Dartmouth as well as for walking in Dartmoor. We would really recommend this cottage.

September 2013

Owl Cottage proved an excellent base for our holiday.

September 2013

We thought Owl Cottage was absolutely wonderful. It is not possible to capture in photos the feeling of space in this very generously proportioned cottage for 2 people ... we did try with our camera! The warm welcome we received from Philip and Margaret's delicious cream tea, which was waiting for us in the cottage upon arrival, was such a lovely start to a very comfortable stay. We very much look forward to returning here again.

White Oxen Manor is an outstanding group of properties to stay at in Devon. It's location allows easy access to the coast or the moor. The owners cannot be more helpful and to be greeting with fresh scones, cream and homemade jam is a nice touch when you driven half way across the country to get there. The provided fresh farm eggs and milk allow you to set up your first Devon breakfast easily. The pet therapy obtained from Rosy the dog is always welcome. Very relaxing and easy going. Thank you again.
