April 2023
Had two lovely evenings at this venue, beautiful setting and staff very friendly. Meals delicious.
June 2022
We had Sunday lunch here. Nice food but we’re very slow in the day. Waited at least 30mins for our starters, which turned up at the same time to our mains. They took our mains away and when we asked to bring them back and take away the starters they disappeared and we had to chase. I think we’re struggling with staff. The food was very nice though.
July 2021
Lovely setting, staff welcoming and friendly, food was delicious.
June 2021
This was the closest restaurant to our house. We had an evening meal there that was enjoyable but perhaps overpriced. The grounds and bird life made it very attractive.
June 2021
We had a lovely meal here, with the food and service being very good. The mill building is full of character, while the grounds are very relaxing and a great place to sit outside with a drink.
August 2019
Lovely grounds and pleasant staff, food expensive for what is served, I think they are trying to be a gastro pub, which they are not.
July 2019
Beautiful inside and out. Gorgeous huge garden with lake and streams. Inside impeccable, large yet cosy.

South Devon Railways
(4 miles)
(2)
A wonderfully traditional West Country attraction, The South Devon Railway (SDR) is a seven-mile former branch of the Great Western Railway from 1872. Running through the valley of the River Dart from Buckfastleigh to Totnes you can board a steam train with heritage rolling stock whatever the weather and whatever age you are. Dogs are welcome on the train for a nominal charge and seasonal charges vary. Step up the luxury on a dining train, or for really special occasions there are options to drive a train for a day or hire one for private events. While you’re there, other attractions close by include the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and Dartmoor Otters and Buckfast Butterflies, to really make a day of it.
Good steam train ride in beautiful scenery, handy for Butterfly Farm and otter sanctuary, nice riverside walk.

Great for steam train enthusiasts with a decent place like Totnes to look around and have a meal. Ideal trip to take young children on

(11 miles)
(5)
Lovely beach. so quiet at certain times. always different. great for dogs. parking very limited.
May 2022
Amazing spot, so peaceful. Parking the only issue.
June 2021
Nice beach and great walks that lead to it, very few people around in August! Limited parking so you are better off walking there.
August 2019
Glorious beach at the mouth of the Erme. Narrow lanes and very limited parking. No toilets, cafes etc - wonderful! Turning circle for cars just before the beach but expect to have to reverse back up the access lane to allow cars that are leaving to go back. A nightmare on Bank Holidays - parking almost impossible and expect to have to negotiate very tight spaces.
September 2017
Lovely beach but bit of a trek for little ones
April 2017
Broadsands Beach
(12 miles)
In between Brixham and Paignton, this long, sandy beach is a popular spot with families, thanks to its sheltered waters, year-round facilities and easy parking. The Blue Flag beach is perfect for making sandcastles and searching for wildlife in the rockpools. There are toilets, and two places to get ice creams, coffees and soft drinks. What’s more, the car park is right by the beach, so there’s no need to lug your provisions a long way. Behind the pretty row of colourful beach huts, there’s a large grassy area, so don’t forget to pack a ball or rounders bat to keep the whole family entertained. Broadsands Beach is a popular dog walking spot throughout autumn and winter, but there is a seasonal dog ban during the summer months (1st May - 30th September).
Ayrmer Cove
(12 miles)
(20)
Roughly one kilometre (20 minutes depending on your pace) from the National Trust car park at Ringmore, and with a selection of footpaths to get to it, Ayrmer Cove is a quiet secluded beach on the South West Coast Path. For anyone on holiday in South Devon it’s a peaceful place to sit and contemplate the natural scenery amongst the shingle, pebbles and rock pools, admiring the cliffs. It makes for a beautiful destination to walk to from Ringmore itself, which is a small village (population 230) with views towards the cove itself as well as Bigbury Bay – it makes for a wonderful holiday cottage destination in South Devon as well as a place to visit as part of your day. Walking to the beach allows you to discover the surrounding woodland, wildlife and history of the area – taking in old smugglers’ routes and hedgerows that have been in situ since the 1800s. It is a little tricky to get to so it’s not ideal for wheelchairs, and there aren’t any toilets or facilities at the beach itself so if you want to stay for a little while don’t forget to take snacks or a picnic if the weather is right. This is all about enjoying the environment that’s such a proud part of the National Trust – it’s everything a holiday in Devon is about, and yes, dogs are permitted all year round and will very much enjoy the walk!
Fabulously unspoilt and beautiful.
June 2023
Childhood memories and very clean

September 2019
A beautiful little cove and fun for dogs and children.
August 2019
You can walk to this secluded cove from the cottage. Probably about 20 mins away, depending on your pace. Plenty of blackberries to eat/collect on route when in season! No facilities at the cove but beautifully unspoilt.
August 2019
Really beautiful secluded beach - great for the dog too!
July 2019
A lovely beach at the end of a beautiful valley. Absolutely perfect for dogs and never busy.
June 2019
Parked in the NT car park at Ringmore and took the 15 min walk down to the beach. Saw a beautiful sunset and had the place to ourselves. Bliss
November 2018
What a fantastic place. So quiet - we had the whole beach to ourselves a lot of the time. Our dogs loved it.
September 2018
A lovely quiet cove, with excellent rock pools at low tide. No sand but the kids enjoy it as an alternative to the massive sandy beaches at Bigbury and Bantham.
September 2018
stunning little beach, very quiet and great for snorkelling
July 2018
Beautiful cove. Very quiet with lots of bird life.
June 2018
Well worth the walk with beautiful views of Burgh island from the coast path. We were the only ones there on a very sunny day in April. Perfect.
April 2018
Simply stunning and well worth the steep (ish) walk down from the National Trust car park at Ringmore. When there - it's hard to imagine the horrors of today's modern world.
September 2017
Gorgeous beach for an evening swim and barbecue. So peaceful and beautiful
June 2017
Mothecombe Beach
(12 miles)
(3)
One of South Devon’s quieter beaches, Mothecombe is a large and unspoiled, privately owned stretch of sand that’s open every day, all year round. Having won an award from the Marine Conservation Society for its clean sea and sand, you can be assured that relaxing here and pottering about in the water is going to be a happy, healthy and pleasant experience for all in this sheltered corner of Devon. For those wanting to try out water sports, Mothecombe offers the ideal conditions for windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and generally enjoying the water, particularly for beginners as it’s a comparatively gentle environment in which to give it a go. Given its pristine nature, it will probably come as no surprise that dogs are not allowed on the beach in high season, so keep an eye out for signs for more information, but best to steer clear with furry friends from May to September. There is a car park from which you can access the beach down a narrow path, so it’s not ideal for wheelchair users, but is otherwise conveniently close by. There’s also a tea house in the car park for drinks and snacks and there are toilets nearby as well, so pending the tides you can spend a good day here enjoying the natural scenery and all the fun that it brings with it, whether that’s for the whole family, on a romantic afternoon in the summer sun, or simply enjoying the peace and quiet of this less populated park of the coastline.
Lovely little cove, even on a wet day! Car park expensive for short stay - £6 all day and quite a walk to beach, uphill all the way back.
September 2023
A delightful beach with fabulous views famous from "Penmarric". Accessed via a path from parking in the field (£5). Alternatively via a wider road to the estuary beach. Lots of walking at low tide and even across to the far bank of the estuary, Clearly other people's dogs loved it on their last day off leash (end of April). We were delighted to find the Old School House, now a restaurant and ate outdoors. Expensive for what it was but it appeared to cater for Londoners given the vehicles parked outside!
May 2021
Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa
April 2017
Elberry Cove
(12 miles)
(1)
Far from the bustling crowds of Paignton and Brixham’s bigger beaches, this small pebbly cove is a truly relaxing spot. The calm waters are great for swimming and are said to have been one of Agatha Christie’s favourite bathing spots. Elberry Cove even features in one of her crime thriller novels, The ABC Murders. This picture-perfect cove, surrounded by sloping wooded hillsides and crystal clear water, can only be accessed by the coast path, with the nearest carpark at Broadsands Beach. From here, it is only a 10 - 15 minute walk, but make sure to pack a picnic or grab a bite to eat at Broadsands Beach before you set off, as there aren’t any facilities at here. Dogs are welcome on the beach throughout the year.
Lovely quieter beach, dog and BBQ friendly. We had teens that hired kayaks from nearby Broadsands beach and paddled around the coast to meet us. Very accomodating kayak hire and not too expensive.

October 2023
We had a wonderful stay in Fox Cottage. The welcome pack was amazing and we used most of it. The cottage was really clean. It had plenty of towels, hooks, crockery, space and the showers were to die for!! A beautiful location and wonderful week away. Thank you
September 2023
Great showers! I was concerned about the traffic noise, but once inside you couldn't hear the road at all.
January 2023
The owners were very welcoming. The Church Inn, Rattery does excellent food (though the local cider is not for the faint hearted).
August 2022
Decor a bit dated
August 2022
Absolutely beautiful cottage with fabulous and private views to the back over the fields. Gorgeous and stylish bedrooms, one with vaulted ceiling, another sunny with views and spacious en-suite. Everything functioned simply and well in the cottage. Lovely living area. Hosts very accommodating and the cottage had very thoughtful extras: toys & colouring for kids; delicious welcome pack; dvds; all kitchen ‘usefuls’ from kitchen towel to foil to dog bags! Nice garden area allocated, private from the rest of the estate and with field views, though not immediately adjoining the property. A very delightful stay and sad to leave!
July 2022
Very friendly hosts and our dog loved their children. Minor issues were lack of tumble dryer inside cottage (when property description on website states one is installed) also would have been good to see rear access to cottage and pathway to garden area instead of just front door entrance/exit only.
June 2022
Yes really nice converted barn in a lovely rural location with great views over the owners land.
June 2022
Had a fantastic time Deb and paul are such lovely people and nothing was too much trouble. The Cottage was spotless on arrival and the welcome package was such a lovely treat homemade scones jam and cream. The kids all had a wonderful time too they felt at home and made some good friends to whom they are still in contact with. We are so looking forward to going again...
May 2022
slightly disappointing after previous stays and higher standards.
April 2022
We had a fantastic holiday and was greeted with a great welcome pack of milk, bread, scones, cream, jam, cereals, butter and a bottle of wine. White Oxen Manor is in a great location and easy access to the A38. The roundhouse is very spacious and we had all we needed with the added bonus of a field to let our 2 dogs run around. We will hopefully be back next year.
November 2021
Very nice welcome pack. Pleasant new owners.
September 2021
very much, superb accommodation, very welcoming hosts.
September 2021
Very much so, really lovely location and the owners were friendly and very helpful - we were made to feel very welcome. Although I have given 'good' for standard of furnishings I fully appreciate that it's a 'dog friendly' property so I wouldn't expect the standard to meet 'excellent'!
August 2021
We had such a lovely time at White Oxen Manor Roundhouse. The welcome package was great and the hosts were very friendly. We loved watching the horses in the fields and the house was immaculate. It is a great location and there are lots of great places to go nearby. In a week we went to Totnes for a wander in the pretty town, Buckfastleigh to the Lido, Buckfast Cathedral, Paignton, Bantham Beach, Haytor, Bellever Woods, Haldon Woods and Plymouth so we were very busy!

Fantastic once again.
April 2018
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in White Oxen Manor cottage, with lovely views all around us. It was a very serene and tranquil area. The cottage was very well equipped, clean and surprisingly spacious. Margaret and Philip were extremely nice and welcoming, without forgetting the home-made scones upon our arrival. We would like to thank them for their good hospitality.
December 2017
A very clean, well equipped and warm cottage. Plenty of room for 6 people and excellent for a family group plus dogs.
September 2017
Very well appointed with lots of extras such as plastic containers, flask etc and welcome milk, scones, jam and cream with flowers in the vase. Great to have the owners on site with helpful hints
August 2017
We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Roundhouse. The property was spotless and beautifully furnished. The owners, Philip and Margaret, were extremely welcoming and helpful; the cream tea on arrival (delicious homemade scones!) and flowers made a lovely start to our holiday. It was the perfect base for exploring the local area and would highly recommend.
August 2017
Although we enjoyed Devon and the weather was kind, we were rather disappointed with the cottage, it had received such good reviews, and for the price we paid we were expecting it to be wonderful...although it was well equipped and furnished It could certainly benefit from a deep clean as could the floors and carpets. There was a sour sickly smell on entering and my feet actually stuck to the kitchen floor! no mop or bucket to clean it with..meant down on my hands and knees. Cobwebs in the small bedroom and a snail on the ceiling! Giant wasps nest outside main bathroom so unable to open window. Fridge was warm, it took 2 days to moderately cool beers or wine, we had to use the freezer. No access to the garden from inside...you had to walk around the back...up a hill, past a manure heap, garden not secure, unsuitable for dogs or toddlers who could easy get through the two latts. We felt unable to use it. Nowhere to walk the dogs from the cottage except across muddy poo filled fields or on the road. Pitch black outside once dark and light useless, torch provided which wasn't much better. On the plus point the owners were very friendly and the scones, cream, fresh flowers and milk on arrival was a lovely touch but I'm afraid we won't be returning
We are really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. Margaret, the owner has no idea why the kitchen floor was sticky – it had been cleaned and certainly not in a rush as the cottage had been vacant the week before so they had plenty of time to make sure it was clean. She does not leave a mop as people have previously forgotten to rinse out and then they have gone smelly in a cupboard. She has also been over to check with the current guests that the fridge is okay – apparently it is turned up to the max but currently guests said no problems and are really enjoying their stay. Margaret said they will look into a new fridge anyway as it shouldn’t be on highest setting really. Regarding accessing the garden we don’t say it is accessible from the house but we don’t say it isn’t either, it simply says ‘to the rear of the property’ which is correct but you do need to walk around from the front door to it – We will make this clearer on the website. Regarding the darkness she said the drive is lit by 3 standard lamps and the yard by 2 standard lamps, both don’t get turned off until at least 11pm. After that time there is a very strong storm lantern, light outside the cottage door and a torch so she thinks that is sufficient Unfortunately neither we nor the owner can do much about the poo filled fields. Cows and sheep do tend to be inconsiderate about such matters, but there are plenty of lovely walks up on Dartmoor, a short drive from the Roundhouse. The wasps – she said there is a nest but she has the bathroom windows open when she cleans and never gets any in, no other guests have said they have been in either. She has been treating them weekly and they are being sprayed again this week so it is in hand. If you ever consider booking with us again please contact the booking team and ask for advice. That way we can ensure we recommend a property that best suits your requirements.

Pleased to say that the day after this review was posted the wasp nest was removed and a new fridge installed.

A totally enjoyable return (as in many previous years) to this excellent property with its most helpful and friendly of owners in Philip and Margaret Andrade.
June 2017
This house was absolutely perfect for us. Fabulous location, equipped with everything we could possibly need, and spotlessly clean. The owners, Philip and Margaret, were so friendly and helpful. A real home from home. Particularly enjoyed the home made scones, jam and clotted cream. Can highly recommend and hope to return one day.
April 2017
A beautiful cottage in a great location. The beds were so comfortable. Plenty of hot water and the showers were superb. Owners were helpful and the cream tea on arrival was spot on . A great stay
February 2017
'Roundhouse Cottage' was very clean, comfortable and equipped to the highest standard. The description and pictures on the website were accurate in every way. 'Roundhouse Cottage' is set on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and places in the South Hams area are easily accessible as the A38 (Devon Expressway) is 2 minutes drive away. We would like to thank Margaret & Philip, the owners, for their warm welcome and the lovely cream tea on arrival. We would highly recommend 'Roundhouse Cottage' to anyone seeking the best in self-catering accommodation.
February 2017
We enjoyed our stay at Oxen Manor, the setting was superb and the cottage was clean throughout. The added touches of fresh flowers, scones, cream and jam were a real treat. We would like to say the owners Phillip and Margaret were really welcoming and especially kind to our children who enjoyed their visits to see Phillips horses. We would definitely recommend this cottage. Thank you Phillip and Margaret.

November 2014
The proprietors were very welcoming and helpful at all times, consequently we felt at home and very relaxed. The accommodation was comfortable, warm and equipped to the highest standards. I would highly recommend this property to anyone seeking the best in self-catering accommodation.
November 2014
The Roundhouse was beautiful in every way. The owners extremely friendly and helpful, the house immaculate and the position for us was perfect on the edge of Dartmoor. However, obviously not so suitable for disabled as it is surrounded by hilly fields which makes for beautiful scenery. You need a car unless you are a good walker but that was no problem to us - our ages ranged from 76 down to 14 - but then we love Devon!!
August 2014
Lovely cottage, lovely owners we were made to feel most welcome. Well equipped cottage with nothing missing everything you could ask for. The cottage is set in a nice area, within reach of some great places. We very much enjoyed our stay and more than enough room for all six of us. lovely scones with cream and jam to welcome us Thank you would stay again

July 2021
Best equipped place we have stayed. Lovely and clean. So much space and in a Beautiful setting.

Please pass our thanks on to the owners. The accommodation was fantastic and so warm and cosy on arrival on a rainy day. Extremely well equipped and clean, best self catering that we've ever stayed in.
October 2020
Very spacious comfortable cottage. Disappointed no cream tea on arrival as had been mentioned in other reviews- probably coronavirus restrictions? Lovely outlook from the main room. Very quiet despite being very close to the Devon expressway- that made it especially easy to find!
September 2020
Owners were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay.
September 2020
Very well equipped and well maintained cottage in great location for visiting both Devon and North Cornwall. Owners were really lovely and were on hand should you need any local information. Would definitely book again .

We have always enjoyed our stays over the years in all the cottages at White Oxen. Philip and Margaret maintain an excellent standard all round as well as being warm and genuine hosts. We shall miss them when they move from White Oxen and very much hope the new owners will continue their good work.
May 2018
Fantastic once again.

September 2023
Great for steam train enthusiasts with a decent place like Totnes to look around and have a meal. Ideal trip to take young children on

Wonwell Beach
(11 miles)
June 2023

Lovely beach but cafe was being renovated and we were gasping for a cuppa
