Description

Halwell House is an ideal spot for a family or couple to enjoy a restful holiday and is within three-quarters of a mile (20 minutes walk) of the very pretty South Hams creek side village of South Pool, close to the Salcombe Estuary.  This lovely former manor house dating back some 300 years consists of nine tastefully converted apartments and occupies a lovely rural position within an area of outstanding natural beauty with numerous beaches nearby.  South Pool, with its quaint thatched cottages has a stream that meanders past the award winning Millbrook Inn (renowned for its good food), ending at the creek approximately 100 yards further on. Here you can amble along the footpath beside the water.

Steps up to hallway. Cloakroom/WCLiving room with leather sofa and tub chairs, large window seat, cosy woodburner and wall mounted TV with DVD and Freeview. Bookshelf with plenty of books, local maps and games. Dining area with table and chairs to seat 6. Kitchen with cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and breakfast bar.  (Communal laundry room available). Bedroom 1 with 4ft 6in bed. Bedroom 2 with two 3ft bunk beds and 3ft truckle bed.  Modern family bathroom with bath, shower over, hand basin and WC.

The lovely grounds of the house are wonderful for both adults and children to explore and include a large level area, excellent for a game of croquet or badminton (please bring your own equipment) and a barbecue area. There are five acres of grounds (shared between the flats), with woods that have been opened up to reveal wonderful old original paved walks with stone walls descending to an ornamental pond (young children must be accompanied. The house is surrounded by National Park farmland including access to a secluded foreshore beach and woodland walk.

  • No telephone, mobile reception poor. WiFi available.
  • Pets: Strictly only one well behaved dog welcome, but to be kept on lead in grounds. Pet charge £25.00 per week.
  • Local Facilities: Beach at Millbay 3 miles. Pub 0.75 miles, further pub, shop and excellent bakery at Frogmore approximately 1.5 miles. Kingsbridge 6.5 miles.

Ideal apartment for a couple or young family. Nicely furnished living room with wood-burning stove, comfortable bedrooms and modern kitchen/bathroom. A small library of books, local guides and games was much appreciated. Negotiating the narrow, sometimes steep country lanes was quite an adventure at first but we found the property is in a beautiful area and is ideally located for exploring the stunning beaches and coves of South Devon. Burgh Island, Torcross, Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands were highlights of our holiday. Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe are ideal for eating out, ice-creams, shopping and lovely waterside views.

We have just returned from a week's holiday in this property, and I have to agree with the previous reviewers regarding the way that this property is very well catered for. You really do want for nothing when it comes to cooking equipment, books to amble through, etc. Lovely white fluffy towels and goose down duvets complete the feeling of being well looked after. It is beautifully situated in peaceful, well stocked gardens, with nothing to hear but birdsong from dawn till dusk - truly enables you to get a complete rest from everyday life! Just one little criticism - the lounge does tend to be very dark - something that doesn't show in the photos (we often had to use the lighting even though it was bright and sunny outside.). I guess this is part and parcel of the older building in which this flat is located, but it did, at times, feel almost oppressive. But, apart from that, we were very impressed with everything provided.

We've stayed at numerous cottages in Devon and surrounding area over last 10 years and one of the best for the following reasons- Spacious apartment for a couple or small family (myself, husband and 18 month old daughter and dog stayed). Brilliantly equipped, more than enough equipment, in particular in the kitchen.. More than your normal holiday rental.. Dish washer tablets, washing up liquid, tea, coffee and sugar.. Even bottle of wine upon arrival. Lots of books for children and adults, information leaflets for the area and DVDs ( mainly for children). Clean, tidy and very comfortable. The information folder about the apartment/building and surrounding area was really detailed and very informative but we didn't find it until the second day on the end of the dining room table...up until then we kind of had to guess how to use heating and water..and other bits and pieces.. I would.recommend putting it in kitchen where you would find it straight away. Great garden for daughter to run about in. Our dog was allowed in garden but had to be on lead which was a shame because would have been lovely for her to be able to have a run about as very well behaved. A few down sides to apartment... 4 steps along hallway up to bathroom and bedrooms which was was slightly disappointing as the reason we booked apartment was so we could avoid stairs with no gates with an 18 month old and even though we taught her to bump down steps we were always really concerned where she was and whether she was going to fall down them. We used the travel cot provided and after hoovering the leaves out of the base we had to use a sheet from the single bed on the mattress as no travel cot/small sheet to use. Would recommend supplying one if supplying travel cot. Would also recommend supplying a high chair for babies/toddlers if to be more child friendly. Also the village of south pool may only be 3/4 mile away but very steep up hill/down hill each way and roads only narrow enough for one car so would no way recommend to walk especially at night...we didn't even attempt, which was a shame as pub in village looked lovely (had a quick drink in there one afternoon). All in all a lovely apartment and would stay again, but just a few tweaks and would be perfect.

This is a really comfortable and stylish apartment with plenty of room and enough space for our toddler to roam around. It is equipped with everything you could possibly need and appliances/cooking equipment/TV were good quality which is something you don't often get in self catering places and was appreciated. The communal grounds were lovely. The location is quite remote but it isn't that far to get to all the main places you'd want to visit. Would definitely recommend staying here.
